Haiti day 5: aftershocks

Apparently there was an aftershock this morning. We didn't feel it,
but our hopes of having clinic in the church faded as the Haitians are
extremely fearful of entering any buildings since "the disaster" as
they call it, a fear that wad heightened this am after the shock.
Interestingly, many of the refugees who are living on the streets or
in tents actually have homes that have been somewhat preserved, they
choose not to live in them.

This is not where we are working .,. Just a good shot on the way.

Haiti day 5: aftershocks

Despite awakening at 5:45 am today, we somehow didn't leave the
Quiseye Christian School (our base camp) until almost 8! Most
Haitians were at outdoor worship services this am as it is the sabbath
for some and a mandatory day of prayer and fasting for all. The sound
of praise music wafted into the streets from pentacostal, baptist,
catholic, and 7th day Adventist gatherings as well as from the heart
of some of the tent cities. The music was so beautiful and joyful and
bolstered our spirits as we drove through this city we are growing to
love.

Haiti day four: one month since the earthquake

The president of Haiti declared today and this weekend national holidays and days of prayer and fasting. We weren't sure what to expect at clinic, but the folks were out in full force, just in their
Sunday best! These two little girls are all gussied up and proudly showing off their new plush toys that used to reside in the Dollahon household.

Our tent had a petite malfunction today ... The generator went out and
our tent deflated! This is team engineer/magician Gordon making good
albeit creative use out if crutches!

This patient hasn't been able to see in years... I had to get a pic of
us together in our lunettes! We gave her the last pair of reading
glasses that we had!

We began the day with worship and prayer in Creole and in English with
patients, medical staff, and interpreters. This short video is of the
Haitians singing a praise song, us looking on, and a brief panorama
into the tent we are using as a clinic.

Haiti day 3: making friends

It rained through the night last so everything felt different this am. The air was heavy and the sky was dark and folks seemed more tense than usual as we drove thru the town centre. People and their
belongings are piled ten feet deep on trucks which looks quite dangerous, but I agree it is the best decision to get ou of here before the rainy season.

Clinic was good today. We saw well over one hundred patients. I was able to do some procedures such as suturing a facial laceration, draining an abcess, and setting a fracture. We were able to outfit the latter patient with crutches as well.

The saddest part of the day was getting to know a teenaged boy who lost both parents and his only sibling in their own house during the earthquake while he was at school. He is really grieving but uncertain how to do so. Please pray that he would be comforted by friends and that our team may provide a brief moment of love and tenderness in this vortex of his grief.

The best part of today was that our truck was an hour late after clinic and we got to spend that time playing with the darling children of Dequini. Enjoy and, don't worry.... We aren't planning on taking any across any borders!!!!
